Copenhagen

This project was inspired by a trip to Copenhagen, I created a sustainable colour palette that I felt reflected the atmosphere of Copenhagen. I was inspired by the culture and lifestyle of Copenhagen and the influence of danish design; especially the concept of hygge, loosely meaning the comfort of everyday life. this concept I wanted to reflect in a relaxing yet joyful colour palette to be used across homeware and in spaces and evoke this comforting feeling. I focused on playful drawing using block shapes directly from my photographs to create patterns and large-scale gouache painted paper collage that I knew I had to make into objects. I created screen-printed textiles from the patterns I had drawn and laser cut wood in the exact hand-drawn lines from my sketchbook. I painted these shapes and created objects that reflected my collages. both aspects of soft and hard materials interested me in this project, with the idea of creating products to work as a whole homeware collection using surface design. As well as this, the small wooden samples were commissioned by Manchester School of Art to create a playful scaled installation in the cafe space of the Art School to promote this joyful comforting atmosphere through colour and simple shape.
